Dharapuram (also known as Rajarajapuram by the Tanjore Cholas), is a famous town and a municipality in the Tiruppur district of the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Dharapuram is one of the oldest towns and largest Taluks in Tiruppur District. 

Dharapuram stands on the banks of the holy Amaravathi River, a tributary of the Kaveri River.It is 450 km far from its State Main City Chennai.It is about 2 hours drive from Coimbatore, on the Madurai route and the drive itself is picturesque with coconut trees and windmills sharing space besides the road.

Dharapuram is also known as viradapuram because of the king viradaraja.His court is situated on the bank of amaravathi,in front of “Thillapuriamman temple”.It is a holy place where panjapandavas (Dharma, Beema, Arjunan, nakulan and sahadevan) lived during their hidden lives.

Dharapuram and Coimbatore gained the status of Municipality on the same day. Dharapuram Municipality was promoted to first grade municipality on May 6, 1983;when Tiruppur was a township. Under British control, Dharapuram was the capital of South Noyyal District, and Bhavani was the capital of North Noyyal District.Now Tiruppur district has taken the leadership role.
